Mold Growth in Your Garage
9/8/2021 (Permalink)
Mold growth in the garage can go from a minor problem to a major issue quickly.
South Florida homeowners know all about September humidity and rainy days. From tropical storms and hurricanes to heavy rainstorms and afternoon showers, Florida garages take a beating when it comes to moisture. Unfortunately, the summer season in Florida creates the perfect combination of elements for mold growth. From the humidity and moisture to the dark environment, a garage is often a hotspot for mold growth in Sunshine State homes.
While the interior of a home is protected from the outside elements, the garage is vulnerable to the exterior elements. Even the tightest sealed garages will have some exposure between the floor and the edge of the garage door. Plus, when pulling into the garage in a rainstorm water will inevitably get inside. Heavy rainstorms can even cause water to pool in the garage, further exacerbating the problem. As such, the garage is a danger zone for mold growth.
Prevention is key to keeping mold growth out of the garage. All South Florida homeowners should be sure to follow these tips to prevent this from happening:
- Regularly inspect your garage, checking for leaks and areas where excessive moisture may be present
- Inspect the roof of the garage to make sure that there are no damaged gutters or broken pipes
- Consider ventilation methods to try to control the humidity in the garage
- Try to keep the garage as well-lit as possible
- Make sure that the garage door is well sealed and be sure to replace seals when they are beginning to wear
- Pay attention to storage and keep your garage organized
- Make sure that anything that is stored in the garage has no water on it
- Avoid using wood or paper products in the garage
- Keep plant growth around the garage to a minimum
- Contact a professional at the first sign of any mold growth
Mold growth in the garage can go from a minor problem to a major issue quickly. It is extremely important for you to apply the above tips in your home. If any mold growth is identified, it is critical to contact a mold removal specialist as soon as possible.

Getting Ready for Florida's 2021 Hurricane Season
4/20/2021 (Permalink)
Here are some tips in order to be best prepared for Florida’s 2021 Hurricane Season.
The 2021 Hurricane season officially starts on June 1st 2021 and lasts all the way through November 30th. According to The Climate Adaptation Center (CAC), they are “predicting a very active season with 20 named storms—less than last year—10 of which may be hurricanes.” Of these storms, 5 of them are predicted to be major hurricanes that could be Category 3-5 strength. A normal hurricane season is usually defined as 3 major hurricanes.
Unfortunately, it does not look like Florida is going to be able to escape hurricane season this year. There is an increased risk of hurricanes this year due to the weakening of the Bermuda high. This Bermuda high is a high pressure zone located in the Atlantic Ocean that was responsible for steering many hurricanes in 2020 away from a direct hit of the mainland in Florida.
According to AccuWeather lead hurricane forecaster Dan Kottlowski, “The pattern that’s setting up is that we could see more of these early-curving storms. That could threaten the east coast a little more this year than previous years.” In order to prepare for this years hurricane season in Florida, it is important to get started early.
Here are some tips in order to be best prepared for Florida’s 2021 Hurricane Season:
Creating a Hurricane Kit
It is very important to have a hurricane kit on hand in case you need to evacuate quickly or need to shelter in place. When people realize a hurricane is coming, many people are filled with a state of panic and run to the grocery store to get supplies to prepare. In this situation, grocery stores are in chaos and can run out of items very quickly. To avoid this situation, prepare a hurricane kit ahead of time with necessary supplies. Some of the most common and recommended items include:
- Bottled water and non-perishable food items (recommended to have enough for at least 3 days)
- First-aid kit
- Flashlight
- Extra batteries
- Personal hygiene items
- Water-proof container for valuables, cash, and important documents
- Lighter or matches
- Cooler and ice packs
- Pet and/or baby supplies if applicable
Securing Your Home
In the event of an hurricane, you will want to know the best ways to prepare you home against high pressure winds, heavy rain, and flooding.
- Use hurricane shutters or wood to cover windows
- Make sure roof is well maintained and, if possible, secure straps or clips to securely fasten it.
- Bring any outdoor furniture, decorations, garbage bins, etc. inside.
- Stay away from windows and doors.
Preparing for a Power Outage
During a storm it is very likely to lose power. In case this happens, there are other things you should do to remain prepared.
- Make sure your car has a full tank of gas instead of waiting until the last minute and having to deal with long lines and gas stations running out.
- Have extra cash on hand in ATMs shut down.
- Charge your cell phone and limit use or use airplane mode.
- Fill the bathtub with water for the purpose of washing and flushing.
Preventing Mold Growth in Your Bathroom
2/2/2021 (Permalink)
Preventing mold growth in your bathroom means taking proactive measures to keep your home in the best shape possible.
There are certain areas of every home that are prone to mold growth. Elements like moisture and darkness create the perfect breeding area for mildew and mold to thrive. While many people think of mold in their kitchen, the bathroom is actually one of the biggest culprits for mold growth in your home. The combination of heat, darkness, moisture, and typically a lack of ventilation means that bathrooms are especially vulnerable to mildew.
Sometimes mold is easy to spot. It can discolor walls or grow on tiles, but in other scenarios it can be much more difficult to spot. A lingering odor or a slightly discolored ceiling can reveal a major mold problem. Since mold remediation can be quite a headache, the best practice is to avoid mold growth altogether. Preventing mold growth in your bathroom means taking proactive measures to keep your home in the best shape possible.
The following are some great tips for preventing mold growth in your bathroom:
- Use the fan at all times when showering and let it run for at least 30 minutes following a shower. This will keep the bathroom properly ventilated.
- Regularly wash the rugs and curtains in the bathroom.
- Consider purchasing a dehumidifier for the bathroom.
- Use an all-purpose cleaner to regularly clean your bathroom.
- Consistently check the toilet and sink for any leaks.
- Try to keep shower walls dry.
- Keep bathing products outside of the bathroom.
- Let as much light into the bathroom as possible.
- If the bathroom floors gets wet, mop it up as soon as possible.
- Seal all grout lines.
While some of these tips seem obvious, it can be easy to neglect to maintain these important measures. If you do notice any mold growth in your bathroom, it is important to call a professional right away. Our mold remediation team has years of experience in repairing mold damage large and small. While South Florida is eager to get back to “normal”, the numbers of COVID-19 cases do not seem to be going down. From homeowners to business owners, keeping things clean and sanitized is imperative. It is easy to fall into the trap of complacency when it comes to dealing with the coronavirus pandemic. People are tired of dealing with masks and sanitizers, making it easy for some to simply go back to the way they used to do things. It is important, however, to remember that with rising numbers precautions must still be taken.
The world has had to completely re-evaluate the way in which it operates. At home, families are sanitizing and washing hands with great frequency. In businesses, the staff is working diligently to keep the public spaces sanitized, regularly cleaned, and enforce mask policies. These changes are difficult to get used to, but they are extremely important for the greater good.

SERVPRO Has The Answers
5/5/2020 (Permalink)
A broken pipe is by far one of the greatest nightmares homeowners face. Even just a small broken kitchen pipe can quickly cause a considerable quantity of damage to your home. It is for this reason that you need to take care of water damage immediately.
Dealing with water damage requires seeking the help of a trained professional water restoration expert, such as the experts of SERVPRO of East Davie/Cooper City. Before they get there, there are a few things you can do to assist in keeping the damages to a minimum. Here are a few tips:
Turn Off the Water
You might be tempted to seek out the source of the leak as your first step. This can be problematic, however, depending on the type of leak or damage. If, for instance is simply an overflowed sink, then you would just turn off the sink. However, what if a pipe that you can’t see has burst?
It’s because of reasons like these that you need to turn off the water supply as soon as possible. It is also recommended that you temporarily turn off electrical power as well. The last thing you want is for the water to mix with electrical wires!
Accelerate the Drying Process
The next step entails doing everything in your power to get your home to dry. Start by opening windows and turning on fans. This will get air flowing through your home, which will help to start drying it and also reduce the buildup of disgusting odors.
If you have a dehumidifier, turn it on immediately. It will extract moisture from the air, thus helping accelerate the drying process. Run it for as long as possible. If you stop early, it could lead to the growing of mold and mildew.
If you don’t have a dehumidifier, then don’t worry, because the water restoration experts will bring one with them. As we said earlier, however, just make sure you contact them right away. They need to get to your home as soon as possible!
Make sure you also remove rugs and other portable carpeting and place them outside to dry. Try to wipe down furniture and personal items (books, chairs, toys) as much as possible.
Pull Out a Wet/Dry Vacuum
Another step that we recommend taking is pulling out a wet/dry vacuum cleaner. We understand that you might not have one. If you do, use it to remove as much water as possible from carpets, upholstered furniture and/or tile and wood floors.
This process can take quite a while, but it’s important to remove as much water as possible. Also, make sure you focus more on wood surfaces than carpeted areas. Due to wood’s porous nature, it’s apt to soak up all the water, which in turn will cause it to become warped and delaminated.
Again, if you don’t have a wet/dry vacuum, don’t worry. The restoration professionals will take care of this for you. Just make sure you contact them immediately!
Things Not To Do
There are some things you should definitely NOT do after your home suffers from water damage:
- Never leave web fabrics and clothing items in place. Try to hang them.
- Also avoid leaving books, magazines and other such items on wet floors.
- Please refrain from trying to use a regular vacuum cleaner to clean up water.
- Avoid using electrical equipment and appliances a like television.
- Stay out of rooms that have a wet ceiling.
These might seem obvious, but it’s good to know. Be especially careful with wet ceilings. They could be much weaker than you think, and the last thing we want is for a roof to collapse on you!
Final Steps
The real work won’t start until the restoration company gets there. Professionals, such as SERVPRO, possess the equipment needed to do real water extraction and repair. Part of this process will involve installing certain equipment, be it professional-grade dehumidifiers and whatnot.
When this occurs, make sure you follow the directions given to you. Usually, the professionals will ask you to keep their equipment running for a while. Make sure you stick to their schedule and do not arbitrarily turn off their equipment. This could negatively affect the drying process and make things worse.
The last thing the professionals will do is give you preventative maintenance tips. It is recommended that you follow through on these steps to insure that your home and belongings return to their former state. It can make the difference between whether or not your home ever suffers unneeded water damage again!

Tornado Season Conditions
Each year in the United States, roughly 1,200 tornadoes occur, and they begin with severe thunderstorms, especially those known as “supercells.”
The formation of a tornado begins when changes in wind speed and direction create a horizontal spinning effect within a storm cell. This is then tipped vertical by rising air moving up through the thunderclouds.
You will, most likely not see the tornado’s signature funnel cloud at first as it is transparent, but the funnel will become visible as water droplets from the storm’s moist air condense or when dust and debris are picked up.
A typical tornado can grow to be 660 feet wide and will move at 10 to 20 miles per hour, although larger and faster ones have been observed. Hail and intense winds of more than 200 mph can accompany tornadoes.
We’ve already established that tornadoes typically occur in the spring and summertime. Late in the afternoon is when conditions become more favorable, but it is vital to remember that tornadoes can occur anytime and anywhere.
What You Should Do During a Tornado Warning
Do you know the difference between a tornado watch and tornado warning? A watch is issued when the conditions are favorable for tornadoes, while a warning is issued when a tornado has been reported by spotters or indicated by radar.
If a warning has been issued for your area, seek a safe shelter immediately, especially if you are in the path of the tornado.
Shelter options include:
- Underground options like a basement or storm shelter.
- The lowest part of your home, in an area that is away from outside walls, doors and windows. Interior closets and bathrooms can be ideal options.
- If you are outside, try to get to a sturdy building. Mobile homes and trailers are not a safe option.
- If on the road and no building access is available, do not get under an overpass or bridge. Instead, find a low, flat location and use your arms to protect your head and neck.
It’s always a good idea to make sure that you have flashlights, a battery-powered weather radio and extra batteries stored in your selected tornado shelter at home.
If you find yourself caught out on the road during a tornado, DO NOT attempt to outrun it. Also, when you are taking shelter in your home, you can provide additional cover by using furniture items like couch cushions, mattresses or blankets to help keep your head and neck covered.
Tornadoes can be devastating on the areas where they touch down. While meteorologists and weather services can provide some advanced warning to potential threats, tornadoes can still occur with little to no warning at all.

Preparing for the Threat of Severe Spring Weather | SERVPRO® of East Davie/Cooper City

Severe Weather
Now that spring has arrived, we can enjoy some warmer—but sometimes unstable—weather. That means we need to buckle up and prepare for whatever Mother Nature may choose to send our way.
Severe Weather and the Spring
The arrival of spring brings with it longer days and more sunshine, but spring also brings with it the threat of severe weather throughout the country. You can never be too sure about the hand you’re being dealt this time of the year, which means the weather may change at moment’s notice.
Fluctuating temperatures that can go from warm to cold within hours cause the weather to change. That temperature change can result in extreme weather changes.
Thunderstorms become more common throughout the spring and are the main cause of severe weather. Thunderstorms occur whenever warm, moist air collides with cool, dry air, which is a common occurrence in the spring and summer.
After studying natural catastrophe losses in the U.S. for 2017, it was found that severe thunderstorms were the most common and produced some of the costliest results. Out of 50 events, there were 85 fatalities and an estimated total of $25.4 billion in overall losses.
These storms can bring about flooding threats, high winds and even tornadoes given the right conditions. It has been found that in modern history, 10% of all violent tornadoes have occurred in March, with April, May and June taking the top spots at 30%, 24% and 15% respectively.
Getting Prepared
There is no way to completely accurately predict the weather; however, forecasters have the tools available to them to at least give us an idea of the possibility of severe weather. Advanced warnings, along with the right preparation, can greatly improve overall safety for your family.
Here are some things you can do to your home to prepare for the chance of severe weather:
- Clear out your home’s gutters, drains and downspouts.
- Trim trees of precarious limbs or branches that could break off in a storm.
- Secure or store outdoor belongings if severe weather is in the forecast.
Having an emergency kit on hand is always advised. These kits should include the following:
- Battery-operated flashlight and NOAA weather radio, with extra batteries for both
- Emergency evacuation or shelter plans
- Important personal info, like telephone numbers of neighbors, family and friends, insurance and property info, numbers for the utility companies, and medical info
- A first-aid kit with things like non-latex gloves, adhesive bandages, tweezers, sterile gauze pads, aspirin packets, adhesive cloth tape and scissors
- 3–5 day supply of bottled water and nonperishable food
- Personal hygiene items
- Blankets or sleeping bag
Despite its unpredictability, there is one thing that always remains true of the spring weather season: It always happens. If your home or business is damaged in a storm, you can depend on SERVPRO® of East Davie/Cooper City to get the cleanup and restoration process started fast.

Water damaged floors
When you are faced with a disaster that has struck at your home or business, time becomes an especially precious commodity. When it is your home or livelihood on the line, you need help right away and you don’t have the benefit of waiting for help.
We’re aware, and understand, that a fast response is crucial, which is why we take fast response to any size disaster seriously, making it more than just a slogan to us.
Why a Fast Response MattersWhen it’s your belongings or business on the line, time is not always on your side when it comes to disaster cleanup. This is especially true when water damage has come into play, which can be through various means such as flooding, appliance and/or plumbing failures, storm damage and fire damage, as water is used to put out the fires.
The walls, the floors, upholstery and your belongings become water damage casualties because it only takes mere minutes for water to spread throughout your property, where it will saturate everything in its path.
The effects of water damage within the first 24 hours include:
- Drywall beginning to swell and break down
- Metal surfaces beginning to tarnish
- Furniture beginning to swell and crack
- Dyes and inks from cloth and paper items spreading and staining
- The beginning of a musty odor
The damage continues to worsen as time goes on. Between 48 hours and a week later, you could begin to see:
- The growth and spreading of mold and mildew
- Swelling and warping of doors, windows and studs
- Metal beginning to rust and corrode
- Paint beginning to blister
- Wood flooring swelling and warping
- The possibilities of serious biohazard contamination
Unchecked water damage that is left for over a week can lead to a dramatically increased restoration time and costs and can also impact structural safety.
Here to HelpBy providing an immediate response to any size disaster, we can help keep damage to a minimum and help keep the cleaning and restoration costs manageable.
Our trained cleanup and restoration specialists can be dispatched to your property or business at any time, no matter what day or time it is.
Being a locally owned and operated franchise helps us be close by and ready to respond whenever the call comes in. Also, one of the major perks of being part of a national network of over 1,700 franchises is that we have access to more resources for the cleanup and restoration projects that may be larger or stem from major storm situations.
Remember, if you need us, we’ll be there—no matter the time or day. The team of highly trained restoration experts at SERVPRO® of East Davie/Cooper City is available for emergency cleanup and restoration services 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
